  Modern American History Course Profile
posted on: 09/07/07 @ 08:59am
Course Objective: The students will show an understanding of the values contained in the U.S. Constitution. They will also demonstrate an ability to apply historical thinking skills to the period from the 1870s to the early 21st century.

Course Requirements: Regular attendance is the key to success in this course.
Effort is the most important ingredient.

Students are responsible for keeping an organized notebook.

Assessment Procedures: Students have homework to study every night. Making notecards is a very effective study tool.
There is a quiz the following day on the assignment. Ten quizzes added together counts as a major test.
In addition, there are three major tests per quarter.
The notebook is graded each quarter and counts the same as a test in the student's average.

Students who are absent are required to get the notes they missed and take the quizzes or tests they missed. The time to do this is after school on Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday. There is a deadline of three days after they return to complete the work. (The day they return does not count. Mondays and Wednesdays do not count.)

Technology: Teacher webpage

Skills: Listening, reading, writing

Extra help is available on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

"The Church's educational institutions will be able to contribute effectively to the new evangelization only if they clearly preserve and foster their Catholic identity. A truly Catholic education will aim at an integration of knowledge within the context of a vision of the human person and the world that is enlightened by the Gospel."

"God's revelation to human beings happened in space and in time. Its crowning moment, the Incarnation of the divine Word, his birth from the Virgin Mary in the city of David during the reign of Herod the great, was a historical event: God entered human history. We therefore start to count the years of our history from Christ's birth."

"It is important to cultivate a sound historical knowledge of the various areas in which individuals or communities live their lives. Nothing is more incongruous for people or groups than to have no history. Ignorance of one's own past leads fatally to a crisis and the loss of identity of individuals and communities."
